School to Community Pathways Program

The School to Community Pathways Program is designed to support secondary students with significant​ special needs, such as:   

  • students with high needs who are experiencing significant intellectual delays
  • require additional time, intervention and support to successfully enter the world of work
  • may eventually transition to assisted living
  • designed to maximize student potential and promote independence
  • focus on transition to the world of work and/or living within the community
 
Supports may include:
  • School to Community Pathway Teacher, Subject Teachers, Educational Assistants, Student​ Program Support Teachers, peers
  • reduced pupil teacher ratio
  • specialized equipment
  • EA support for personal care and safety needs​
 
Courses may include:
  • K Courses (non-credit bearing courses with a focus on functional and practical skills) 
  • Locally Developed Courses (lower class size and designed for students who may not be ready for the Grade 9 curriculum in English, Math and Science)
  • Open Courses (focus on skill development and experience such as the arts, physical education, technology, religion) 
 
K Course examples:
  • Literacy and communication skills
  • Development of mathematic and problem solving skills
  • Preparation for daily living and workplace settings
  • Social skills development 
 
School to Community Pathways runs out of Room 141 with opportunities for integration and involvement in a wide variety of school courses and activities such as The Best Buddies Program.  
       
 
 
Transitions to the Community
 
As part of transition planning, we assist families in finding community partners that will provide next steps in the transition to adult living after secondary school.
